About Us

Earth Heart Growers (EHG) is a non-profit organization created to support the well-being of our Charleston public school children. We offer in-school gardening, culinary and baking classes and marketing lessons emphasizing sustainable practices and cultivating habits in our future citizens that help improve the environment and encourage children to develop healthy lifestyles.

Earth Heart Growers connects the Charleston School District with Joseph Fields Farm. Joseph Fields Farm is a 50-acre, certified organic fruit and vegetable farm located on the fertile John’s Island of Charleston, South Carolina. The land is stewarded by Joseph Fields, a third-generation Gullah-Geechee farmer whose heart is as large as his harvest.

“Joseph, Helen (his Wife), Alexandra Seaman and I volunteered in the fields starting in springtime of 2016, when this vision first became a reality. We started by taking 15 adolescents to the farm. Each time they became more open, more aware and more conscious in nature – just as Dr. Maria Montessori described in her Erdkinder Curriculum. It just makes sense for the adolescents to be in the fields.” Liz Ramirez – EHG Executive Director.

Joseph and Helen’s sponsorship of Earth Heart Growers (EHG) began in 2016.

The Field’s family began welcoming adolescent students from EHG’s partnering schools to the farm for on-site agricultural education programs. It was the beginning of a wonderful partnership…
